On Jan. 20, a local branch of an international company received a threatening e-mail. The extortionist said he would release a detrimental PowerPoint document Jan. 27 if he was not paid $200,000. The presentation, timed to be released just before a trade show important to the company, contained "elaborate accusations of faulty manufacturing on the target company's products," said Lt. Sean Lynch, APD Investigations Division commander. Lynch said that the veracity of the document's evidence was not established. However, the document would raise questions about the company's products at a sensitive time, regardless whether the presentation was valid or not. APD has not released the company's name, although reports place the company on Atlantic Avenue. The company vice president contacted APD. Investigation turned up a suspect, 50-year-old Edward Contreras. "He wasn't trying to hide his identity in his e-mails," Lynch said. According to police, Contreras was a former employee of the company he targeted, and was discharged in 2008. Contreras filed in court to obtain benefits from the company, but lost the case, police said. "We can definitely describe him as a disgruntled former employee," Lynch said. Police obtained a warrant for Contreras' arrest. The suspect's last known address was in Hayward. "He moved out the day before he sent the e-mail," Lynch said. "His whereabouts are unknown."
